Imperial College London’s “Dean’s Award for Excellence in the Faculty of Medicine” Recognizes a Researcher from the Magdi Yacoub Heart Foundation as the First Arab and Egyptian Recipient

The Magdi Yacoub Heart Foundation has announced that researcher Mohamed Roshdy, a member of the Research and Innovation Centre, has been awarded the “Dean’s Award for Most Outstanding Performance in the MSc Molecular Medicine Program” from Imperial College London securing first place with distinction in the master’s program. This recognition comes in light of his groundbreaking research on coronary microvascular dysfunction in Egyptian patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Roshdy is recognized as the first Arab and Egyptian recipient of this esteemed recognition, indicative of the excellence and innovation he contributes to this domain.

Roshdy conducted this research project in collaboration with the Research and Innovation team at The Magdi Yacoub Heart Foundation, supervised by Professor Yasmine Aguib, Professor Magdi Yacoub, and Professor Terracciano’s team at the ICTEM Centre at Imperial College London. The main aim of this work is to understand the coronary microvascular dysfunction in a comprehensive way, therefore, advancing personalized medicine, and enhancing existing current diagnostic tools. The findings were endorsed at the European Society of Cardiology conference in 2023, and ongoing endeavors are directed towards disseminating the results in top-tier scientific journals globally.

Joining the Research and Innovation Centre at The Magdi Yacoub Heart Foundation as a scientific researcher, Mohamed Roshdy played a pivotal role in establishing the Cell and Tissue Biology Unit at the Aswan Heart Centre. Following the attainment of his bachelor’s degree in biological sciences from Aswan University, he was awarded a Sawiris Foundation for Social Development scholarship for his master’s degree. In 2023, he successfully completed his MSc in Molecular Medicine at Imperial College London.

This well-deserved recognition for Mohamed Roshdy is perfectly aligned with The Magdi Yacoub Heart Foundation’s strategy to develop and empower Egyptian and Arab medical scientific talents, contributing to enhancing healthcare capabilities in the region. Furthermore, the foundation actively forges strategic partnerships with leading universities and medical institutions to advance research and development in the medical and health fields.

The Magdi Yacoub Heart Foundation is in the final stages of constructing The Magdi Yacoub Global Heart Centre in Cairo, spanning 36.5 acres in the 6th of October City, aiming to provide free medical services to patients. The centre’s capacity will reach 120,000 patients and 12,000 surgeries annually, with 60% dedicated to children. Additionally, the centre offers practical medical training opportunities for over 1,750 medical personnel through the Foundation’s Education and Training Centre. The centre also includes a research and innovation department to advance research in basic, applied, and biomedical sciences, adhering to the highest international medical standards.
